Relief Sculpture Christmas Ornaments

Second Grade sculptors at work:
relief sculpture Christmas ornaments!

First we sculpted the mold.  Caroline and Catherine discovered that seashells pressed into clay make great angel wings...

Mrs. Monahan mixed plaster of Paris with water and poured it into the molds.
Why are straws sticking out?
Because straws will leave holes in the ornament after the plaster hardens.
The plaster sets and hardens overnight.
In the next art class, we separate the mold and ornament.
Our design appears in reverse!
We paint on the plaster with watercolors.
We must stand the paintbrush "on tiptoes" to paint tiny areas.

Parents, be ready for delightful Christmas presents under your tree!
